Umweltschutz hatte in der DDR formal einen hohen Stellenwert. Aber vielerorts gab es dramatische Umweltschäden. Die Luftbelastung war in Industriegebieten und großen Städten oft gesundheitsschädlich, und ein großer Teil der Abwässer wurde ungeklärt in Gewässer geleitet. Umweltschutz wurde zu einem wichtigen Thema der Oppositionsbewegung: Menschen protestierten gegen den staatlichen Raubbau an Natur und Ressourcen.
